Should i Avoid fats to lose weight?
A lot of people are lead to believe that to lose bodyfat we must avoid fats as they are bad for us. This however is not the case. There are certain fats we need to avoid in order to maintain good health and a healthy weight but not all fats are created equal. Saturated fats are the nasty fats that need to be avoided, we do need some saturated fats in our diet though and is considered safe as long as it doesnt exceed 10% of total fat calories ingested. Essential fats such as olive oils, almond oils, flaxseed oils, fish oils etc... are actually encouraged for fat loss or weight management as they are know to aid in the transport of fats as fuel therefore helping burn and REMOVE unwanted bodyfat. Essential fats are also needed for repair and recovery of muscle tissue, tendon and nerve damage. When choosing your essential fat option be sure to choose a variety which is high in omega-3 and avoid high intakes of omega-6 fats. A degree of omega-6 fats are required by the body for optimal function but research shows that omega-6 taken in too high a dose leads to fat deposits. My favourite source of essential fats is flaxseed oil as it contains all three omega's ( omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9 ) which are naturally in the right proportions for healthy consumption. My next favourite is fish oil which is generally high in omega-3's. Dont just limit yourself to oils though as there are many healthy fats out there such as nuts and avocados etc... REMEMBER NOT ALL FATS ARE CREATED THE SAME, and just as we have essential aminos required to function each day we also require certain types of fat to remain healthy. A good example of this is the need for saturated fats for males in order to help maintain testosterone levels. Not all saturated fat is created equal either as coconut oil for example is high in saturated fat yet it has an enormous reputation for aiding in good health due to the make up of the oil and its inclusion of medium chain triglycerides which help make it a safer option for energy needs and is used by many professional athletes as an energy sources during different stages of training such as stripping fat for example. The bottom line is that as you get to understand how the fats work within our system you begin to realise that they are necessary for good health and just need to be used in the correct way. I personally dont take in much saturated fats and primarily ingest essential fats and the majority of time when training my intake is between 50 - 100 grams per day and i dont gain any extra bodyfat. in fact i normally maintain or lose bodyfat using these levels. That doesnt mean you should do the same as it depends also on training and activity levels of the individual. Any further questions on this matter can be answered if you leave a comment or enquiry along with this post.
